A cohort of 2nd years and 1st years met w/ Dr. Wheeler and two Family Medicine residents, Derek Adams and Taki Galanopoulous. We talked about how ALL of the things we've attended, hosted, coordinated, planned this year to the first years and about how we, as an FMIG, would like to become one of the Program of Excellence recipients at the AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) national convention in Kansas City. This has been a rebuilding year for the FMIG here at UofL, but we've made tangible progress in engaging w/ our classmates.

AAFP conference

Orientation Week Booth

"What is Family Medicine?" -Dr. Wheeler

Residency Roundtable

Family Medicine Resident Mentoring program

Heart Sounds workshop

Casting/Splinting workshop

Residency Fair

on the menu for next semester are

Tar Wars

Touched Twice Ministries

Working w/ Dr. Faye Jones

Interacting w/ FM residents ("pick your brain hour")

We hope to see more 1st years step up next semester to help w/ organizing events so that transition of leadership will occur smoothly. Fun times in the overflow room on the 1st floor!

For those of you who missed out, Dr. Becker and Dr. McKee taught us the basics of casting. Using stocking nets (sp?), felt rolls (like the stuff surrounding model trains and miniature Christmas towns), and bright red fiberglass (not fibroblast) rolls, we partnered up and casted each other.

pictures to come soon!

Quotes:

"Rub it like you love it!"

Dr. McKee taught that to ensure that the fiberglass layers "laminate" together well, you have to rub the cast (with rubber gloves) with your palms in a proximal-distal direction to cement the layers together (with vigor).

"Set it and forget it!"

From me.
